Companies that lose out aren't proactive and don't set out to win new business. In the current economic climate it's more important than ever to go out and look for new business opportunities as you simply can't rely on customers coming to you. Here are some things that you should look out for:
1) Having a website is the first step - if you don't have one you could be missing out on hundreds of potential customers. Use your website to reflect your business online and keep it up-to-date...you wouldn't let your shelves run empty!
2) It's vital that your site can be found online. SEO (or search engine optimisation) is carried out by digital marketing experts and they will ensure that the search engines can find all of he key pages on your site. They will then optimise the site for keywords which are relevant to your business so that you achieve good rankings. For example, if you own a beauty salon in Kent, does your website appear on the first page of Google for that term? If not, then you should invest in ‘search engine optimisation’.
3) Are you social? Hundreds of millions of people are now subscribed to Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites, are you making the most of this opportunity? Create a brand page on Facebook, like it and get your friends to like it too. Join in the conversation on Twitter and follow people relevant to your industry.

Is Now The Time To Join Goolge +?
With the recent Business update from Google for their social platform, Google+, is now the time to join?
After its initial launch the talk surrounding the possible rival to Facebook seems to have died down, however this recent update has stirred things up a little.
It's now evident that Google have been and will continue to put a lot of effort into their social platform. They have recently launched business pages, which work in the same same way as Facebook pages for businesses. The difference here is that the Google+ page will be displayed when you carry out a brand search. This helps the business to occupy more of the search results page, making Google+ ever more important...

The Importance of an SEO Audit
Before you embark on any SEO campaign you should request a technical audit of your current website. If the search engines can't find the key pages within your website then there's no point in paying hundreds of pounds for somebody to optimise your website.
An SEO technical audit will highlight any potential issues from duplicate content to problematic URLs and missing sitemaps.
With a full technical audit in hand you'll then be able to fix any major problems which will help to kick start your SEO campaign.

John Lewis and Next Show That Websites Are Key
Large retail stores, John Lewis and Next, have both just released details of their Christmas sales figures, and if we can learn anything from them it's that consumers are turning to the web.
Both stores showed increases in online sales over the Christmas period, with John Lewis posting an increase of 20%. Surprisingly Next revealed that the number of people buying from their physical stores actually decreased which reveals a large shift in consumer buying trends.
These examples show that it's more important than ever to have an online presence, and even more importantly you must be found online. Large brands like Next and John Lewis have the added bonus that consumers will go directly to their website, but smaller online businesses will struggle to be found.
This is where online marketing really pays off. SEO and PPC not only ensure that your website ranks for keywords which are relevant to your business, but they also help drive relevant and qualified traffic your way.
